From Shedding to Ignition

Nervous System Wisdom for the Fire Horse Year of 2026
Have you felt the shift lately?
It’s subtle at first like a change in the air, a different rhythm in your body, but once you notice it, you can’t unfeel it.
On February 16, the Wood Snake year came to a close. On February 17, we stepped into the Year of the Fire Horse.
And this transition? It’s not a gentle one.
The Snake pulls us inward. It’s strategic, reflective, psychological. The Horse pulls us outward. It’s bold, visible, fast-moving. And Fire? Fire turns the volume up on everything; ambition, expression, leadership, intensity.
Before we get swept up in that momentum, it’s worth pausing to understand what we just moved through.
The Wood Snake Year: A Year of Shedding
In Chinese philosophy, Wood is the energy of growth; stretching upward, expanding, reaching. The Snake is the energy of transformation; shedding, refining, releasing.
Together, 2025 asked us to:
- Let go of old identities
- Release emotional residue
- Confront grief
- Break outdated patterns
- Create space for what’s next
For many of us, this wasn’t a tidy, journal-and-tea kind of shedding. It was messy. Physical. Emotional. Unexpected.
For me, it showed up in my lungs.
I kept experiencing waves of congestion and coughing, nothing viral, nothing structural. It felt deeper, like my body was trying to say something I hadn’t wanted to hear.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the lungs hold grief. They govern breath; our ability to take in life and let go.
When grief is unexpressed, Lung Qi stagnates. When emotion is suppressed, the nervous system stays subtly activated. Breath shortens. Cortisol rises. Immunity dips. Energy gets stuck.
Suppression isn’t just emotional. It’s physiological.
When I finally made space to feel what I’d been avoiding, old grief, old resentment, old unmet needs; my body softened. My breath deepened. The coughing eased.
Shedding isn’t poetic. It’s biological.
Now We Enter the Fire Horse
The Horse brings movement, charisma, independence, and momentum. Fire brings intensity, passion, leadership, and illumination.
So what might 2026 bring?
- Acceleration in career and visibility
- A desire for independence
- Leadership opportunities
- Creative expansion
- Courageous decisions
- Public expression
But here’s the part most people miss:
Fire moves fast.
If your nervous system is dysregulated, Fire feels like anxiety. If your nervous system is regulated, Fire feels like confidence.
That’s the difference.
The Wood Snake year wasn’t random, it was preparation. You can’t sustain Fire without grounding.
Fire and the Nervous System
In Ayurveda, Fire corresponds to Pitta—the energy of drive, focus, and intensity.
Balanced Pitta brings clarity, decisiveness, and leadership. Excess Pitta brings irritability, inflammation, and burnout.
So how do we move through a Fire year without burning out?
A few simple anchors:
- Prioritise sleep
- Keep consistent routines
- Eat grounding, cooling foods
- Practice slow exhalation breathing
- Protect your energy from overstimulation
- Pause before reacting
Fire needs containment. Power needs regulation.
A Simple Transition Ritual
If you want to consciously close the Snake year and step into the Horse year with steadiness, here’s a gentle ritual to support you.
1. Completion
Ask yourself:
- What did 2025 teach me?
- What did I release?
- What grief did I finally acknowledge?
- What identity did I outgrow?
Write it down. Thank it. Tear the paper and let it go.
2. Regulation
Inhale for 4. Exhale for 8. One hand on your heart, one on your belly. Five minutes.
This signals safety to your vagus nerve before you initiate action.
3. Intention for Fire
Ask:
- Where am I ready to be visible?
- Where am I ready to lead?
- Where am I ready to move decisively?
Write three grounded intentions. Not frantic goals. Aligned direction.
Moving Forward
The Fire Horse year isn’t about running blindly. It’s about moving with power.
And real power comes from:
- A regulated nervous system
- A clear heart
- A body that feels safe
We shed so we can ignite. Now the energy turns outward. Move wisely.
