Identity, Culture & Body Image: Learning to Love Your Body Through Ayurveda

There was a time in my life when I didn’t want to look like myself.
Growing up in a small country town, I was the only Asian girl in my entire community. I felt different. I stood out. And instead of embracing that, I longed to blend in.
I didn’t want to look Asian.
I wanted to look like everyone else.
At a young age, I internalised the idea that who I naturally was… wasn’t quite right.
Then came the influence of media; magazines, advertisements, images of beauty that looked nothing like me. They reinforced a very narrow definition of what was considered attractive, desirable, and worthy.
And I tried to become that.
The Pressure to Be Someone Else
As I moved into modelling, dance and acting that pressure intensified.
My body became something to control.
My appearance became something to perfect.
And slowly, my relationship with myself began to fracture.
I developed patterns around food that were rooted in restriction, comparison, and fear. Not because I didn’t respect my body, but because I didn’t yet understand it.
And I know I’m not alone in this.
Even today, so many women are still navigating:
- Cultural expectations
- Beauty standards
- Comparison through social media
- The pressure to look younger, thinner, different
We are constantly being shown versions of who we “should” be.
Ayurveda Changed the Conversation
When I discovered Ayurveda, something shifted in me.
For the first time, I was introduced to the idea that:
There is no one ideal body.
There is only your body.
Ayurveda teaches that each of us has a unique constitution, our dosha.
Your body is not meant to look like someone else’s.
It is meant to express your own nature.
And when I understood that, I began to soften.
You can discover your unique dosha with my dosha quiz here.
From Rejection to Acceptance
Instead of trying to change myself, I began to understand myself.
I began to see:
- My body has its own rhythm
- My energy has its own flow
- My features carry my heritage, my story, my lineage
What I once tried to hide… became something I could honour.
And this is the work I now share with women.
Because loving your body is not about forcing confidence.
It’s about understanding.
It’s about compassion.
It’s about coming home to yourself.
A New Way Forward
If you’ve ever felt like you don’t quite fit the mould…
If you’ve ever compared yourself or wished you looked different…
If you’ve ever struggled with food, body image, or identity…
Please know this:
You were never meant to be someone else.
You were meant to be fully, unapologetically you.
