The Deeper Roots of Honouring the Mother

Across ancient traditions, the mother has always been revered as sacred.
In Ayurveda and Vedic philosophy, the feminine energy; Shakti is the force of creation itself. She births life, nurtures it, and guides its transformation.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Yin principle reflects the mothering quality; soft, receptive, grounding, and deeply powerful.
In Indigenous traditions, we honour Mother Earth, the great nurturer who sustains all life with patience, rhythm, and wisdom.
Across all of these teachings, there is a shared understanding:
The mother is not just a person.
She is a principle.
A living presence.
A force that exists within us and around us.
Whether or not you received the mothering you needed, there is a part of you that knows how to care.
A part of you that knows how to nourish, protect, soothe and guide.
This is the Mother Within.
She speaks quietly:
“Rest now.”
“Slow down.”
“You’ve done enough.”
“I’ve got you.”
But in a world that often rewards doing over being, many of us have become disconnected from this voice. We override our needs, we push through exhaustion and we keep giving without replenishing. And over time, we forget how to receive.
Reconnecting with this inner mother is one of the most powerful ways to restore balance, not just emotionally, but physically and energetically too.
A Ritual to Reconnect with the Mother Within
This is a simple, beautiful ritual you can return to whenever you need support.
Find a quiet space, light a candle or sit somewhere peaceful. Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly.
Close your eyes and take five slow, nourishing breaths. Gently ask yourself:
“What do I need right now?”
Listen without trying to fix or change anything. Then respond softly, as the mother within:
“I hear you. I’m here. Let me take care of you.”
Stay here for a few moments and feel your body soften. Feel yourself being held by you.
Honouring a Mother Who Has Passed
For those who have lost their mother, this time can feel tender.
Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, it lives in the body, often in the heart, the chest, the breath. Honouring her can be a quiet, intimate act.
Here is a simple ritual to support you:
Light a candle in her honour, sit in stillness and bring her presence into your awareness.
Speak to her out loud or in your heart; thank her for what she gave, acknowledge what may have been missing.
Allow your emotions to move freely without judgment and when you’re ready, gently close with:
“I honour your life.
I release what no longer serves me.
I carry forward what strengthens me.”
This is how we begin to transform grief into integration and connection into something that continues to live within us.
The Invitation to Mother Yourself
As we move through life, especially for women holding many roles, we begin to realize something important. We are not meant to keep pouring from an empty cup. We are here to fill our own cup first.
When we do, we become more present, more patient, more compassionate and more aligned. We begin to give not from depletion, but from wholeness.
